THE EDUCATION OF JANE CUMMING

The lives of two female teachers in 19th century Edinburgh are ripped apart by a malicious accusation in this intense drama.

Marianne Wood and Jane Pirie have built a life of modest success, running a school for girls. Three new pupils arrive – two sisters and their bi-racial cousin, Jane Cumming. Shunned by the other students, young Jane becomes increasingly attached to her teachers despite their unease. When an argument escalates, it sparks the false allegation, with life-changing consequences.

The Education of Jane Cumming is based on a true story documented in Scotch Verdict, a book by Lillian Faderman, which also provided the inspiration for the 1961 film The Children’s Hour. Beautifully shot with superb performances, this story of racism, queer longing and the quest for female autonomy is timeless.

‘Ultimately, this is a richly textured, thought-provoking period drama and queer coming-of-age story that does justice to the real-life character of Jane, finally giving her a long-overdue place at the center of her own story.’ – Next Best Picture.
