Sheep in the Box
In a not-too-distant future, a grieving couple welcome a humanoid robot version of their deceased seven-year-old son, Kakeru, into their home to help process their loss. The humanoid looks and behaves exactly like Kakeru but his presence gradually exposes the unspoken wounds and regrets each parent carries after the loss. Meanwhile, he begins to slip away to meet other humanoid children, unnoticed by the parents.
Kore-eda (Nobody Knows, Broker, Monster) draws strong performances from the child actors in this thought-provoking drama about the future of grief, human relations and parenting.
‘Kore-eda has taken the stuff of dystopian cyberpunk nightmares and turned it into an elegant, wistful fairytale.’ – Deadline Hollywood
