Only 3 CINECITY Days Left http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2007/2007/11/30/only-3-cinecity-days-left/

We know that this is going to be hard for you to hear, but be strong for a minute or two...we are, we're afraid to say, heading into the final weekend of CINECITY! However, there's no way we'd let the festival finish on a down note and in fact this weekend's so pack full of screenings and events that it's going to be impossible to have any time to get maudlin.

Dance for Camera is in full force across the weekend with several events - have a listen to our podcast interview with Vicky Bloor, Head of Screen Dance to find out more details and to hear from some of the featured artists. Our Val Guest Retrospective comes to a close with THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE, a masterful merging of the thriller and science fiction genres. While director Pavel Giroud's Havana set, relationship drama between three generations, THE SILLY AGE plays at Lewes Cinema who we've been very proud to add as a new CINECITY partner venue this year.

Your CINECITY http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2007/2007/11/28/your-cinecity/ One of the things that makes CINECITY that little bit extra special is the dedicated audience that's supported the festival since before it even took its first steps back in 2003. Don't skip ahead, this isn't going to turn in to some kind of mushy walk down memory lane, shudder the thought! It's more of a call to arms, or more accurately pens. The reason CINECITY's improved year on year has been that you've not been shy in coming forward with your comments about the good and the bad of things and whilst we're sure you'll continue to let us know what you're thinking, we've made it even easier for you to do so with this Evaluation Form which you can download, complete on your computer and email to infor@cine-city.co.uk or if you prefer to complete it longhand, you can print it and drop it off at one of the festival venues. There should also be Evaluation Forms available at all the screenings and events and we'd really appreciating you taking a few moments to fill one out before you head off.

It's been good to see the ticket competition entries still coming through thick and fast. There'll be a couple more over the next few Newsletters, but for now congratulations go to Jackie Blackwell who answered KT Tunstall to grab the RUBY BLUE tickets and to Zoë Dibb who won her seats for IMPORT EXPORT with Hundstage.

Billy Cowie's In the Flesh http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2007/2007/11/19/as/

Even though the name above the door reads CINECITY, there are many events throughout the festival that just wouldn’t be possible without the strong partnerships we’ve created with our various supporters and fellow film innovators; Billy Cowie’s 3D installation, In the Flesh, as part of the Dance for Camera 2007 festival , presented by our friends South East Dance , being amongst them. Here are a few reasons why you should set a date for it in your festival diary:

This unique magical installation took 12 months to create and has already been seen by hundreds of people internationally. To experience In the Flesh the viewer must first put on 3D glasses, take position on top of a wooden box and then watch the space directly in front of them. As the whir of the projector starts up, a life-size performer appears before the viewer on a zebra print rug. Dancer, Sara Popowa moves fluidly before your eyes with subtle stretches and movements. Popowa is an experienced Butoh dancer, and the discipline and control exercised in this Japanese artform is reflected in her movements. Haunting music, composed by Cowie provides the backdrop, as the viewer is taken on a captivating, almost voyeuristic journey.

Cowie explains, ‘I wanted to get the performer into the space, so it feels like she’s really with you.’The suspension of disbelief is emphasised as Popowa stretches out her arm and looks up from the rug in one fluid move that feels like she is looking directly at you, as the viewer, fusing the relationship between audience and artform.

The size of the dancer depends on the amount of space available and the angle of the projection. When In the Flesh was exhibited at the Paradiso club, a converted church in Amsterdam, the installation was half the size, giving the dancer a doll like quality and creating a completely different experience for the viewer.

Cowie’s poem, Permafrost , provides the final element to the piece which is spoken over the top of the music. The text has been translated into several European languages for accessibility at international tours.

Cowie has worked as a practicing artist for the last 25 years and is celebrated as a choreographer, musician, poet and filmmaker. When asked about his varying and extensive skills, Cowie proclaims, ‘I’m a jack of all trades! I do enjoy taking part in the whole process though, that way you can ensure everything fits together perfectly’.

His first 3D piece was a collaboration with Liz Aggis three years ago called Men in the Wall. The installation, which toured internationally, comprised of four screens, each ‘housing’ a different man. The viewer wears the signature 3D glasses and watches as the four miniature men come to life, singing, chatting, playing musical instruments and interacting with each other.

As a Brighton based artist for over three decades, Cowie is delighted to début In the Flesh as part of Dance for Camera 2007 festival . He said, ‘it is fantastic to have the UK premier in Brighton. South East Dance and Arts Council South East have been so supportive of my work.’

The free installation will be exhibited at the Lighthouse Digital Lounge , 28 Kensington Street, Brighton, from Wednesday 21 November – Sunday 2 December between 10am- 9pm.

CINECITY Featured in Empire http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2007/2007/11/12/cinecity-featured-in-empire/ The folks over at Empire magazine are well known for keeping their ears to the ground and delivering the best film news to their readers, so it's good to see they've included a great piece on this year's CINECITY:

"Co-curated by the Duke Of York's Picturehouse and the University of Brighton, Cine-City returns for its fifth edition between 15 November and 2 December. In addition to a raft of previews, the programme also includes a tribute to the underrated British director Val Guest and a special focus on the Austrian avant-garde.

A number of the mainstream features have a biographical feel and the most remarkable is Julian Schnabel's The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, which stars Mathieu Amalric as Jean-Dominique Bauby, the charismatic editor-in-chief of French Vogue, who developed a blinking alphabet to communicate with the outside world after he was stricken with `locked-in syndrome', following a massive stroke at the age of 43. The theme of acceptance is shared by Kasi Lemmons's Talk to Me, in which Don Cheadle plays Ralph Waldo 'Petey' Greene, who overcame drug addiction and a spell inside for armed robbery to become an advocate for civil rights and one of Washington's most prominent media personalities in the 1960s."

24 X A SECOND http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2007/2007/09/11/24-x-a-second/ Masterclasses / Screenings / Installation

The essential qualities of cinema – light, movement, time, space – have been rigorously explored by filmmakers from Vienna. Probably more than any other national artists’ cinema, these Austrian filmmakers have engaged with the materiality of film to create a cinema of purity and intensity.

Experimental and avant-garde cinema has a status in Austria not really found anywhere else in the world. The country made a major contribution to international cinema in the late '50s and early '60s with the first wave of pioneers including Peter Kubelka, Kurt Kren and Valie Export. The ceaseless innovation can be seen in the rich tradition of Austria’s history of radicalism across the arts.

This special programme for CINECITY focuses on two of the key figures of Austrian avant-garde cinema, Peter Tscherkassky and Gustav Deutsch and we are delighted to welcome both of these seminal figures to CINECITY to present masterclasses.

Since 1996, Gustav Deutsch has been scouring film archives around the globe, retrieving fragments of film including test shots and discarded edits and adding them to an ongoing project called Film Ist. “Like a dream book, Film Ist. makes one imagine an archive that Jorge Borges might have assembled.” (Tom Gunning)

Peter Tscherkassky is one of the world’s most acclaimed experimental filmmakers. His spectacular projects such as The Cinemascope Trilogy are marked by a mastery of technique and intense theoretical approach. His cinema is both jubilant and sinister and while acknowledging the end of the celluloid era, his works draw their power through effects that can only be created by film. “There are three factors that influence my work permanently: working with found footage, working directly on the film stock (together with the possibility of physical manipulation of the film) and, in general, the capacity of the film medium to evoke a dreamlike atmosphere”.

Val Guest Short Season http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2007/2007/09/10/val-guest-short-season/

As a tribute to the British director Val Guest who died last year, we'll be presenting a short season including his own favourite works.

Brighton, London, Manchester and Bath were the settings for a powerful series of city-set films made by Guest between 1960 and 1963. All evocatively shot on location by cinematographer Arthur Grant, the films explore these British cities as sites for the criminal underworld, quarantine and disease and environmental catastrophe.

HELL IS A CITY (PG)

Starring Stanley Baker, John Crawford, Donald Pleasance, Maxine Audley, Billie Whitelaw. UK 1960. 96mins.

A gritty and uncompromising noir thriller shot on the mean streets of Manchester. Cinema great Stanley Baker stars as hard-boiled Inspector Harry Martineau tracking down an escaped villain who has broken out of jail and headed back to Manchester to get revenge. Shot entirely on location, Guest approached it ‘almost as a semi-documentary, as if we were a newsreel team’. With Arthur Grant’s beautiful black and white ‘Hammersccope’ cinematography, he makes terrific use of Manchester's streets, rooftops and surrounding moors. Stanley Black's stylish jazz score expertly propels the film and Guest surrounds Baker with top-flight supporting actors, including a young Donald Pleasence and Billie Whitelaw.

THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE (15) New Print

Starring: Edward Judd, Janet Munro, Leo Mckern, Michael Goodlife. UK 1961. 98mins.

London is sweltering in record temperatures and the River Thames has dried up. The Sahara has flooded, New York is suffering unseasonable blizzards and there are tornados in Russia. A strangely prescient vision of climate change and global warming, THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE was made at the height of the Cold War and highlighted the idiocies of the nuclear age. Guest’s Bafta-winner follows the repercussions of superpowers USA and Soviet Union detonating nuclear bombs simultaneously at the North and South poles, spinning the earth off of its axis and sending it hurtling toward the sun. Combining the thriller and science fiction genres to great effect, newspapermen Bill Maguire (Leo Mckern) and Peter Stenning (Edward Judd) dig deep to uncover the terrible truth. The images of the capital’s empty streets are the setting for a tense and gripping disaster movie prefiguring more recent work such as Danny Boyle’s SUNSHINE.

JIGSAW (PG)

Starring Jack Warner, Ronald Lewis, with John Le Mesurier. UK 1962. 107mins.

A murder mystery shot on location all over Brighton (and briefly in Lewes) starring Jack Warner of TV’s DIXON OF DOCK GREEN fame. The Brighton constabulary painstakingly assemble the jigsaw of clues as they attempt to track down the murderer of a woman found in an isolated house. Jigsaw is marked by an unprecedented level of co-operation between police and filmmakers in a screenplay inspired by the Brighton Trunk Murders of the 1930s.

80,000 SUSPECTS (adv PG)

Starring: Claire Bloom, Richard Johnson, Yolande Donlan, Michael Goodliffe, Cyril Cusack. UK 1963. 113mins.

New Year’s eve celebrations are brought to an abrupt halt when a case of smallpox plunges the city of Bath into quarantine. Dr Steven Monks (Richard Johnson) attempts to locate the source of the outbreak whilst trying to hold together his disintegrating relationship with his wife Julie (Claire Bloom) a dedicated nurse. The epidemic forms the backdrop for a melodrama featuring sickness and adultery but Guest blends documentary elements and an impressive use of location to instil a sense of realism.
