CINECITY 2017 | 15th edition | 10-26 November

Back for its 15th year, in 2017 we were thrilled to present two weeks of previews, exhibitions, live scores, Q&As, workshops and special events.

Taking the 70th anniversary of Brighton Rock as inspiration, this year we celebrated Brighton in all its glory. Audiences enjoyed a programme of events celebrating the film that put Brighton on the movie map, including a 35mm screening of the Boultings’ acclaimed 1947 adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel Brighton Rock, the premiere of a live commission You Want Me To Say I Love You and a related exhibition, FAKE NEWS: The British Cinema Newspapers.

Since its inception in 2003 CINECITY has worked with musicians and partners to present, commission, and create live cinema events. In 2017 we presented two brand-new scores for classics The Lodger, scored live by Covent Garden Sinfonia, and Metropolis, with a new score by Factory Floor commissioned by London Science Museum.

Exhibitions included work by both local and international artists, with moving image presented in the gallery and cinema space. FAKE NEWS: The British Cinema Newspapers, an exhibition exploring the use of newspaper headlines as a storytelling device in cinema, re-created significant newspaper front pages from Brighton Rock and a host of British thrillers. We were also pleased to present Christian Marclay’s film Looking for Love and Stan Douglas’ Luanda-Kinshasa.

2017 also saw the introduction of two new venues: Depot cinema in Lewes and Towner Art Gallery in Eastbourne screened new features, documentaries and artists’ moving image.
