Final Film confirmed MILK, starring Sean Penn http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2008/10/13/final-film-confirmed-milk-starring-sean-penn/ MILK (adv 18) Director: Gus Van Sant. Starring: Sean Penn, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna. USA 2008.

In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum. From senior citizens to union workers, Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights before his untimely death in 1978, when he was shot by a former city supervisor. MILK charts the last eight years of Harvey Milk’s life from his decision to leave New York, to his involvement with the famous Castro Cinema and his decision to become a spokesperson for change. Sean Penn stars as Harvey Milk in this excellent biopic from a visionary director.

Cinecity visit the Quays http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2008/10/10/cinecity-visit-the-quays/ Last week the Cinecity Team had the privilege of meeting the Quay Brothers at their London studio, a stone's throw from London Bridge Station.

Once we found it, the studio was a surprisingly inconspicuous first floor loft, but nevertheless a sanctuary inside!

This is their creative headquarters - hidden amongst a primary school playground, remnants of pre-war architecture that survived the blitz and new designer flats. This is where they have shaped their ideas and made their work for over 2 decades.

During the visit we discussed how the CINECITY exhibition will be presented. It will be the first time their exhibition 'Dormitorium' and installation 'Eurydice -She So Beloved' (commissioned by Capture and Opera North) will be shown together in one gallery space.

They generously offered us a selection of Polish Film Posters by Roman Ciesliewiz and Henryk Tomaszewski from their personal collection for CINECITY - a very exciting addition!

Frank and Sara are looking forward to meeting them again at the festival launch on 21st November.

Watch this space for more info on the Quay Brothers .

Opening Night Film Confirmed! http://www.cine-city.co.uk/2008/10/10/opening-night-film-confirmed/

It's confirmed - CINECITY has its opening film and will be launching this year's festival on 20th November at The Duke of York's Picture House with Woody Allen's latest comedy drama VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA!

Director: Woody Allen. Starring: Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall, Patricia Clarkson. USA/ Spain 2008. 96 mins.

Woody's latest return to form, ponders the nature of love and romance against the sun-drenched backdrop of beautiful Barcelona. Two Americans abroad, Vicky (Rebecca Hall) a student of Catalan Culture and her friend Cristina (Scarlett Johansson), find themselves seduced by more than just the city when they meet a free-spirited artist, Juan (Javier Bardem). At first it seems that Juan and Cristina are made for each other, but events take an unexpected turn causing complications for all concerned. Tensions are heightened when Juan's ex-wife, Maria (Penelope Cruz), enters the mix. Shot by Spanish cinematographer Javier Aguirresarobe, Barcelona has never looked more tempting. The impressive cast are all at their best with Javier Bardem giving a particularly splendid central performance as the archetypal sexy Don Juan Spaniard, with Cruz clearly enjoying the role as the volatile wife.
